Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics

(1 customer review)
DESCRIPTION

The first textbook that systematically links syntax and exegesis of the New Testament—perfect for students of Greek who are “second-year” or at an intermediate level.

For seminary students, the goal of studying Greek grammar in the first place is to ultimately get beyond the grammar itself and understand it well enough to use it in the accurate exegesis of biblical texts.

Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics—the most up-to-date Greek grammar available—integrates the technical requirements for proper Greek interpretation with the actual interests and needs of Bible students. It explores numerous syntactical categories, some of which have not previously been dealt with in print, and has a number of distinguishing features, including:

Exegetically significant illustrations, discussed in depth.
Semantic situations—or contexts for simple semantics—are developed and analyzed.
Expanded definitions and numerous examples and syntactical categories.
Grammatical statistics listed at the beginning of major sections.
Scores of charts, tables, and graphs.
Sound exegesis requires that the exegete consider grammar within a larger framework that includes context, lexeme, and other linguistic features. This textbook faithfully equips intermediate Greek students with the skills they need to do exegesis of biblical texts in a way that is faithful to their intended meaning.

The expanded edition contains a subject index, a Greek word index, and page numbers in the Syntax Summary section.

Going Deeper with New Testament Greek

(2 customer reviews)
DESCRIPTION

Updated to 2020 Version!

In his final letter to his foremost disciple, the apostle Paul made this solemn appeal: “Be diligent to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15). The message is clear: Timothy (and, by implication, all teachers of God’s Word) must work hard to arrive at a correct interpretation of any given passage of Scripture. Such careful attention to correctly interpreting Scripture was to set Timothy apart from false teachers such as Hymenaeus and Philetus (2 Tim 2:17). Since the NT was written in Greek, and since inerrancy and inspiration extend specifically to the Scriptures in the autographs (original manuscripts), a good working knowledge of NT Greek greatly enhances one’s interpretive skill.
In this book, we hope to stir in you a passion, and to provide you with the necessary tools, to “go deeper” in your pursuit of your mastery of NT Greek. You’ve taken a course or two in elementary Greek, or perhaps taught yourself by using some of the many helpful tools that are available. You’ve memorized the most common Greek vocabulary, learned the basic forms of the Greek noun, adjective, and verb, studied foundational principles of Greek syntax, and tried your hand at translating NT texts of increasing difficulty. But you know that you’ve got more to learn. We want to help you take your knowledge of NT Greek to the next level, not as an end in itself but as a means to correctly interpreting and teaching God’s Word. So are you ready? Let us take a moment to get oriented, and then we’ll be off and running in our quest to “go deeper” with NT Greek.

New International Commentary: The Epistle to the Romans

(2 customer reviews)

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Verse-by-verse commentary
  • In-depth discussion of textual and critical matters
  • Introductions to each book’s authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology
  • Detailed bibliography

DESCRIPTION

Paul’s letter to the Romans has been called “the quintessence and perfection of saving doctrine.” Perhaps the most challenging and thoroughly doctrinal book of the entire New Testament, Romans deals with many issues that are basic to Christian theology and practice. In this volume respected New Testament scholar Douglas J. Moo provides a superb study of Paul’s letter to the Roman Christians and restates the enduring message of Romans for Christians today.

Based on the English text but bringing into the discussion the underlying Greek at every point, this commentary focuses both on theological meaning and on contemporary significance. Moo contributes to the continuing debate regarding Paul’s teaching on such issues as Jewish law and the relationship between Jews and Gentiles in the people of God. He also critically interacts with “the new perspective on Paul,” highlights Romans’s emphasis on “practical divinity,” and traces the theme of gospel throughout the epistle.

Twelve years in the making and a steady seller during its first decade in print, Moo’s Epistle to the Romans will continue to serve as a standard exposition of Romans.

NET Bible, version 2.1, full notes edition

(1 customer review)

New separate commentary notes!
Version 2.1 Released!

The NET Bible is a powerful new translation of the Bible (having 58,504 translators’ notes by experts in the original biblical languages). When you combine theWord Bible software program with this Bible, you can easily see the translator’s many notes by simply mousing over the translator’s note’s number, and the actual text will pop up.

These translator’s notes are an excellent commentary for Bible students knowing Greek and Hebrew in that they point out the original words, how their underlying forms (grammatical structure) affects the translation of the verse. But at the same time, while this highly technical information is available for the experienced scholar, it is also very clear and understandable for the common Bible student as far as what it means. For example, the moods and tenses of Greek verbs often have comments when they reflect on the meaning of the text. This is very helpful and insightful to common Bible student.

This is an updated version 2 of this work. It also adds Strong’s numbers to the text.

IF UPGRADING FROM NET 1
Using NET2 Commentary Notes – notes are now available again as separate Commentary notes, and yet also remain in the footnotes as well.

New International Commentary: The Books of Haggai and Malachi

(1 customer review)

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Verse-by-verse commentary
  • In-depth discussion of textual and critical matters
  • Introductions to each book’s authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology
  • Detailed bibliography

DESCRIPTION

This commentary by Pieter A. Verhoef offers a thorough exegesis and exposition of Haggai and Malachi—two important books of Scripture that, unfortunately, are not only little studied but have sometimes been maligned by contemporary scholarship—and stresses the relevance of these prophets’ messages in terms of continuity and discontinuity for the Christian church.

Verhoef’s introduction to each book elucidates the questions of authorship, style, text, structure, historical background, and message. Making extensive use of structural analysis, Verhoef argues convincingly for the authenticity, unity, and integrity of both books.

Verhoef also brings his knowledge of the ancient Near East, the Old Testament, and past and current biblical scholarship to bear in the commentary proper, and he displays theological acumen and pastoral sensitivity in tailoring his exposition for the student and pastor as well as for the scholar.

New International Commentary: Song of Songs

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Verse-by-verse commentary
  • In-depth discussion of textual and critical matters
  • Introductions to each book’s authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology
  • Detailed bibliography

DESCRIPTION

Relationships are a wonderful, mysterious, often elusive, sometimes painful part of the human experience. The most intimate of all human relationships, according to the Bible, is that between a husband and a wife. It is no surprise, therefore, that there is a book of the Bible, the Song of Songs, that focuses on this relationship. What is surprising is how little attention is given to the Song of Songs by scholars, by the church, and by readers of the Bible. With this volume Tremper Longman III unpacks for modern people what this ancient love poem says about the male-female relationship—and, by analogy, about God’s love for his people.

Longman’s superb study begins with a thorough introduction to the Song of Songs and its background. Longman discusses the book’s title, authorship, date, literary style, language, structure, cultural milieu, and theological content. He also canvasses the long history of interpretation of the Song of Songs, a history too often characterized by repression of the text. In the commentary itself, Longman structures the Song of Songs according to its twenty-three poetic units and explains its message verse by verse. The exposition is made clearer by Longman’s adoption of an anthropological approach to the text and by his frequent comparisons of the Song of Songs with other ancient Near Eastern literature.

Learned yet highly accessible, innovative yet fully informed by past scholarship, this commentary shows the beautiful Song of Songs to be a timeless celebration of human love and sexuality.

HET NEDERLANDS INTERLINEAIR
